The City
Welcome to Baldur’s Gate, a veritable nest of rats and vipers clinging to the rocky slopes overlooking the Chionthar River. From their high perches in the Upper City, the local nobles—known as patriars—gaze down with veiled contempt upon the common rabble in the grimy Lower City, which hugs the foggy harbor. The whole of Baldur’s Gate reeks of blood, crime, and opportunity. One can easily fathom why pirates and traders are drawn to this place like flies to a carcass.
The Elfsong Tavern
Those who seek adventure in Baldur’s Gate often gather at the Elfsong Tavern. The bartender and proprietor Alan has gained a reputation for making it his business to know everything that goes on in his pocket of the city. He’s taken to maintaining a job posting board prominently featured on the far left wall on the first floor, and always makes sure to ask any takers to let the poster know who sent them.
Mortar and Pestle Potions
New adventurers often cut their teeth searching for potion components in the sewer basin below Merchants Lane. Thankfully Mortimer Mortar of Mortar and Pestle Potions both buys those components and sells potions that keep you alive to procure more.
Willfortes’ Cartography
New arrivals should be sure to pick up a map in the cartographer’s shop near the Elfsong, as various employers will mark the locations of quests so adventurers can easily find their way to their destiny! Customers can also always use their maps to find more mundane locations around the city as well.
Lower Level Content (Levels 1-3)
Baldur’s Gate strives to provide choices to its players because hey it’s your world. Not every character will be interested in facing the same challenges or choose to accomplish the challenges they take on in the same way. Some areas that lower level characters will be sure to want to check out are detailed below!
Sewer Basin Overflow Ochre Jellies
How hard could ochre jelly collecting be, right? As long as you can keep your distance, not too bad, but get careless and you could have a leg digested before you know it! If all goes well though you will have an abundance of components to brew with or sell.
Sewer Vines
If there is one thing The Gate wishes to avoid at all costs its another plague, and nothing can start a plague faster than a backed-up sewer. To avoid this, the city has adopted a rather aggressive maintenance budget to clear the animated vines that root along the intake tunnels to the east of the city.
Emaciated Zombies
Rumors of emaciated zombies being raised under the slums for nefarious purposes are spreading through the city. Just ask One Armed John. While whoever is raising them and for what purpose remains a mystery, the fact that more keep showing up is a well-established fact.
The Wizards Apprentice
One of these days Buppi is going to get that spell right. Until then she would be more than willing to hire some one to get her masters house back in order before he gets home. Just watch out for the tables and chests they might rearrange you this time around.
Mid Level Content (Levels 4-6)
No matter what challenge you just summited, there is always another one on the horizon, and in The Gate it’s no different. In time, the sheltering overflow basin and quaint tranquility of trimming back sticks will more likely than not leave characters wondering if there is more to this world than the small portion they have come to master.
Eastway Giant Ants
Sugar will invariably draw ants and no matter what Vicharry tries, it seems like nothing will keep them out of his stock. Talk around the tavern has it that he will reward any that can kill their Queen and bring back proof with a lifetime daily supply of potion infused cupcakes. The Baldur’s Mouth gives their restorative properties a 5 out of 5 Gates.
Courier Intercepts
The Flaming Fist patrols the streets, but what happens under them is a free for all. Couriers are rumored to funnel goods and bribes out of the city under The Basilisk Gate, but who do they work for and where do the bribes go?
Shrine of Suffering Carrion Crawlers
Brother Hodges has his hands full trying to care for the cities forgotten. Between running the soup kitchen, his advocacy for the poor with the upper class, and seeing to the last rights of those that cannot afford any other means of interment, he hasn’t been able to find time to clear the infestation of carrion crawlers that has taken hold in the crypts. Perhaps he would accept some help? Perhaps he could even scrounge up some small Ilmateri trinkets as a token of his gratitude?
Cloakwood Forest Small Tasloi Camps
At this point the tasloi have become so firmly entrenched in The Cloakwood Forest that the weaker of them are starting to be pushed to the outskirts. The Grand Dukes have become nervous that if their numbers continue to grow they could start to threaten trade or in time even the city itself. It is for this reason they have commissioned a bounty on tasloi ears. How many can you collect before the tasoli collect you?
To Catch the Ants
You didn’t think ants were at the top of the food web did you? The spiders that feed on the colony certainly don’t. It seems they will drag anything they can back down into their lair. Interestingly though it doesn’t seem like they care to digest gems, gold, or potions.
Higher Level Content (Levels 6-9)
Soon I’m sure you’ll start to think that you have your feet under you, but do you know what’s under your feet? The deeper you dive into the sewers under The Gate the more you will find out!
Of Haywire Spiders and Bug Bears
How does this even make sense? Why would out of control mechanoid spiders and a tribe of bugbears cooperate with one another? Your guess is as good as mine.
Hobgoblins and the Gods they Feed
Travelers are being snatched off the The Coast way. Some are merchants, some are making pilgrimages to the Song of the Morning, some are just travelers. They are all rumored to meet their ends in a terrifying manor. Maglubiyet seems well satiated for now though.
Ratchild’s Kobolds
How many Ratchild’s is this now? Why cant the High House of Wonders seem to stamp them out? For that matter why are the kobolds so insistent on assaulting the gnomes?
